AI Tax Privacy Checklist: What Never to Paste Into a Chatbot

Describe, don't upload. Turn off model training. Never share your SSN, bank numbers or IP PIN. Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN.

Before you open a chat

  • Turn off model training. In ChatGPT: Settings, Data controls, turn off "Improve the model for everyone." [1]
  • Or use a Temporary chat: OpenAI says these are not used to improve models and may be kept up to 30 days for safety. [1]
  • Note that rating a response with thumbs up or down can make that conversation usable for training even after opting out, per OpenAI. [1]

Never paste

  • Social Security or ITIN numbers
  • Bank account and routing numbers
  • Your IRS Identity Protection PIN
  • Full scans of W-2s, 1099s or prior returns
  • Your address, date of birth or employer ID

Do this instead

  • Describe your situation in general terms and round numbers.
  • Copy only the question text from your software, not your answers.
  • Using a browser or computer-use agent? Follow the extra rules in AI agents for your taxes.

Protect your identity at the IRS

  • Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN, which helps prevent someone filing a return with your SSN. [2]
  • Watch for AI-enabled scams: the IRS warns of AI-driven impersonation calls and fake IRS messages. [3]
The IRS generally contacts taxpayers by mail first and does not call to demand immediate payment. [3]
